Partners Alan Crooks and Jane Picking joined forces over five years ago to form House of Design. With Jane's wealth of experience in interior design and Alan's 30 years experience working in the bespoke furniture industry, it was a match made in heaven. The company has since evolved into a dedicated team who have a real passion for exquisite design and beautiful furniture, and who pride themselves on their abundant knowledge and expertise, within both the luxury residential and commercial interior design sectors. Our signature and distinguished product style is always evolving and combines elegant and classic influences with a contemporary edge and comes from all over Europe including Paris, Milan, Florence, to name but a few. We aim to continuously inspire our customers with our extensive collections. We also offer our own bespoke furniture design service, giving clients the luxury to choose style, fabric and dimensions that suit their environment.
When asked to work on this exciting development, House of Design instantly understood why their widely-travelled client had fallen in love with the undeniable elegance of the former Sacred Heart convent. Originally known as Hill House and built in the 1790s, it has now been converted into nine properties and sensitively renovated throughout. Steeped in history, with its striking original features, the Grade II listed building boasts superb classical proportions.
On entering the property through its imposing front door, you are captured by the historic character of the ornate fireplace in the lobby and the impressive grand entrance hall, paved with black and white marble, and lined with carved-oak panelling. From this rises a sweeping staircase, overlooked by the original stained-glass windows that were made by the workshops of William Morris. These are stunningly lit by a mighty crystal chandelier, clearly visible from its frontage.
By pulling together unique pieces, sumptuous fabrics, bespoke upholstery and lighting, with rich colours and layers, the aim was to celebrate the historic character and grandeur of this landmark building. With exacting attention to detail and empathetic understanding of their client’s tastes and aspirations, House of Design’s focus was always to exceed expectations, and achieve a beautiful, discerning, yet supremely functional home.
The sitting/dining room draws on a classic opulent style, to give the space warmth, splendour and a refined elegance. The floor-to-ceiling antique mirrored walls, opulent navy velvet upholstery and majestic gold lights all add strength in their scale.
The master bedroom has been designed to have a truly sumptuous feel. With smoked glass either side of the imposing padded headboard, the specially-crafted crystal chandeliers hang elegantly over the reverse antique mirrored chests. The rich bronzes and deep warm tones create a glorious opulence.
In complete contrast, the second bedroom has a truly heavenly feel. Combining tones of white and ivory with stunning textures and layers gives dimension and a luxurious grace, and the angelic vintage mural paper in the ensuite adds that atmospheric, ethereal touch.
