After a warm and friendly greeting at the door of Magic Mushroom, we were shown to our table. The whole restaurant was alive with conversation and laughter. After perusing the concise menu, I chose the chorizo and baby squid to start which was fresh and perfectly balanced with the spicy guacamole and tangy salsa. Mrs Exquisite decided upon the salt beef with gherkins and horseradish cream. A delicious and classic combination, with a modern twist. To follow, my perfectly cooked fillet steak, with heritage beetroot and truffled dauphinoise was truly outstanding. Mrs Exquisite enjoyed pan-fried salmon, crushed potatoes and samphire. Brought together with an almond and caper beurre noisette, simply divine. To finish, I chose the beautifully presented and inventive ‘tasting of apple’. Comprising apple strudel, mousse, toffee apple sauce and apple sherbet, I loved it. Baileys and Amaretto cheesecake for Mrs Exquisite, a perfect end to a faultless meal.
After the obligatory pre-dinner G&T, the friendly staff at Masons showed us to our table. Sticking local, I ordered the north Essex curried pigeon kebab which was great! Served with Bombay potato, poppadum and tatziki, all the elements worked together perfectly. Mrs Exquisite opted for the equally delicious local asparagus. Wrapped in Parma ham, with pink peppercorn butter, rocket and Parmesan it got a big thumbs up! A classic lamb shank followed, accompanied by spring onion mash. Cooked long and slow the succulent lamb fell off the bone beautifully. Mrs Exquisite, feeling rather hungry, ordered the 16oz rump steak. Cooked medium rare it was tender and delicious. To finish, a sticky and indulgent treacle tart for Mrs Exquisite. I couldn’t resist a selection of fine and lesser known cheeses from Masons interesting cheese board. From start to finish, a very enjoyable evening.
