Jimmy Doherty On Jimmy's Farm And His Top Places To Visit In Essex
Farmer and TV Presenter, Jimmy Doherty talks to Exquisite about the unusual new arrivals at Jimmy’s Farm and his favourite places and memories of Essex...
How and why did you set up Jimmy’s Farm?
I’ve always been interested in nature and animals and had loads of them growing up. When I was a kid, I got my first chicken and made scrambled eggs for my whole family. I couldn’t believe that one egg had fed four people and I fell in love with the farming aspect of food production. We bought the farm because the land was perfect for pig farming, but it was a total blank canvas, so we gradually built it up from being derelict, using animals to regenerate the land and help build up the farm to what it is today.
What’s new at the farm?
We’ve got loads more animals on the farm this year, most notably two Bactrian camels - camels with two humps! Plus we have loads of weddings booked in and we’ve just got a massive new marquee for hosting them, which is going down well.
What makes it such a great family day out?
There’s something for everyone. I’ve got a big family myself and I know how challenging it can be finding somewhere the whole family will actually enjoy, so we’ve always had that in mind and always aim for good value for money. It’s an old-school day out that kids love and it takes adults back to their childhood with things like den-building and woodland trails.
Do you have big events lined up?
We’ve worked with the amazing theatre charity, Red Rose Chain for the past eight years, and they’re putting on a production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the woodlands at the farm this summer. There’s a pre-theatre dinner in the restaurant and then a magical walk through the wildlife park to the show. It’s running from 31st July – 31st August and tickets are available via their website redrosechain.com – it’s going to be really special, so come down!
We’ve also got our Big Beef Night in November that always sells out. It’s a ten course beef extravaganza that you don’t want to miss! Plus we’re making plans for Jimmy’s Festival 2020 which is set to be the biggest yet…
