What afternoon wouldn't be well spent at a street party. Children will love the colourfulness of the utterly traditional setting, grandparents can enjoy a nice sit down at a table filled with treats. The tradition of street parties has a long history as a popular way of celebrating special days. Many were organised to mark the end of WW1 and since that time, the community get-together has grown in popularity. They are an excellent way to get all of the neighbours together. SET THE SCENE Set up long stretches of oblong trestle tables covered with white tablecloths and a gathering of wooden chairs straight from the houses of the street (or an eclectic mix from friends and family). Colour it up by choosing a theme and try to stick to it for a chic effect. FOOD & DRINK Suitable dishes for street parties include crudités and dips, sandwiches, scotch eggs, trifles and the classic jelly and ice-cream. A nice touch is to perhaps add a retro sweetie bag for the children and grownups to take away at the end of the party. Fill with blackjacks, fruit salads, sherbert fountains with a stick of liquorice, raspberry drops, liquorice allsorts, dolly mixtures, gobstoppers, sherbet lemons and toffees.
