The government has announced its support for a proposed garden town on the Essex-Hertfordshire border, between Harlow and the village of Gilston. Gilston Park Estate is expected to provide 8,500 new homes, regenerating Harlow town centre and stimulating job creation in the process. There will be an investment of £500 million in infrastructure, to make sure the town has everything the community needs, from schools and healthcare, to sports facilities and allotments. Traffic has also been considered, so plans for changes to local roads include a new junction for the M11. Although the estate is to be built on green belt land, over half of it will be left as open space, with parks, woodland and walking and cycling trails.
The government has also announced funding for a new garden village in Essex. Dunton Hills Garden Village, to be located between Brentwood and Basildon, will eventually have up to 5000 homes. The development will include schools, shops and health facilities.
