Pride of Essex
McEvoy from Shoeburyness, Essex, required a birdie to finish one clear of his nearest rivals, Renato Paratore, Christofer Blomstrand and Allen John and land an astonishing victory that will live long in the memory.
The event took place at the Green Eagle golf courses in Hamburg, Germany. A tense affair, the final stages were incredibly exciting as multiple competitors, including McEvoy, were competing for the lucrative prize. It would not have been an understatement to call this game 'an emotional rollercoaster'. All the players seemed to falter and rise to the occasion throughout the day. Agonisingly, it was the last hole that decided the fiercely-fought contest but McEvoy was the man who came out on top.
The 39-year-old rolled the ball home with a twenty-foot putt to secure his first major win at a championship and a handsome $333,330 to take home for his efforts.
McEvoy becomes the first player ever to win the Challenge Tour and European Tour in succession.
In 2001, Richard McEvoy had a huge year. One that would prepare him for greater glory later. He won the 2001 Lytham Trophy and the 2001 Irish Amateur Open Championships and was a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team. McEvoy won the PGA Euro Pro Tour in 2002 and gained a European Tour card in 2003. It was not until 2010, however, that McEvoy became a regular on the professional golf stage.
Ranked 275th in the world, McEvoy had not finished above third in any event previously before his massive win in Hamburg. For more golf news, click here.
