"We were delighted to head back to The Royal Hotel’s Ballroom restaurant in Southend-on-Sea to try out the new dishes on their autumn menu. As always, the staff were attentive and helpful, providing us with detailed descriptions of the food which awaited us. The restaurant was beautifully lit with glistening chandeliers and plush purple decor, offering a warm and cosy atmosphere – perfect for a chilly Saturday evening.
For starters, Mr Exquisite and I were treated to a chilli and ginger Scotch egg and a smoked mackerel crumpet. The Scotch egg had a perfectly-crisp coating with succulent sausage meat, accompanied with a spicy chilli jam – a hot dish that awoke the palate. The smoked mackerel crumpet was a refreshing start to our meal, paired with a soothing crème fraîche which complemented the dish beautifully.
For main course, I indulged in a deluxe burger and chips. The triple-cooked chips were delightfully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the burger meat was succulent and tender, finished off with a pickled burger sauce all packed together in a soft brioche bun. Mr Exquisite enjoyed the Dingley Dell sausage and mash, describing it as the perfect autumnal comfort food. From creamy mash to juicy sausages and a rich gravy, each component did not disappoint. To finish off, we relished an intensely-chocolate tart with coffee ice cream – a great end to a luscious meal at The Royal Hotel."
