Croatia’s first underwater wine cellar

Fancy a glass of red from the bottom of the ocean? This underwater wine cellar in Croatia needs to be on your bucket list So we all know that feeling when Friday night comes round and we’re dying for a glass of wine. But how about diving for your wine? You up for it? We thought so. Croatia’s first-ever underwater wine cellar, Edivo Vina, is taking provenance to a whole new level. Located just an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik on the Pelješac Peninsula, Edivo Vina is now organising diving trips to its underwater cellar. With experienced divers, you’ll dive down to the sunken boat in the Bay of Mali Ston where the Navis Mysterium bottles of wine are kept. From the beautiful sea life, to the adventure of diving for your bottle of wine, this truly is an unforgettable experience. So how does it all work? Firstly, the wine is aged above ground for three months, then put into amphora (tall clay jugs). These jugs are then taken down to the sunken boat, where they stay until they reach maturity. Now don’t think this is just a gimmick for the adventurous wine lover. There’s serious method to their madness. “The sea provides natural cooling in ideal conditions and the perfect silence underwater improves the quality,” explains the wine experts at Edivo Vina. You can even buy a bottle to take home with you – ornately decorated with sea shells and coral from its time underwater! Imagine how your friends will react when you tell them that the red they’re drinking is from the bottom of the Adriatic Sea! Serious kudos! Wine lovers it’s time to brush up on your diving skills… *but remember diving under the influence is not prohibited!* Plan your trip If serious glamour is what you’re after, check in to the recently re-opened Hotel Excelsior. VISIT ESSEX Wine and Beer Festivals

For over 30 years, CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) have held their annual festival at the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel near Colchester. This year is no different. Choosing Essex to play host is nothing new for the county, as it is home to some very successful breweries and vineyards. The 31st festival will take place on the 5th-9th of September and those who travel by train can take the Greater Anglia Sunbury Line (From Marks Tey) directly to Chappel Station where they will arrive at destination: Festival. Once there, the beer awaits -why not test your taste buds and sample something new? Weekend visits require ticket entry as it’s an incredibly popular day (as you can imagine) so don’t miss out! Known for having the least amount of rainfall in the UK, Essex has the perfect range of soil for vineyards. Purleigh has one of the oldest vineyards in the UK to grow Bacchus grapes. New Hall Vineyard holds an annual English Wine Festival and Fun Day on September 3rd-4th. While you can sip on some fine wines there are great activities for children, crafts and food stalls and a whole lot of entertainment. West Street Vineyard’s (Essex’s newest vineyard) theme is ‘The Only Way was Gold’, celebrating the win of the prestigious award of the same name in the World renowned International Wine Challenge 2017 in May. The award honours what West Street is best at – the vines, the fantastic restaurant serving local produce and as much wine-tasting as you like. If you enjoy bike rides in the Essex countryside, why not try the ‘Essex Way’ footpath from Harwich to Epping and take a stop at Dedham Vale Vineyard? The vineyard hosts its own Cider and Wine Festival on the 25th-27th August. There you can grab a glass of wine or two overlooking the stunning lake and wonder around Constable country. Billericay Brewery is a micro-brewery and shop based in Billericay that produces conditioned, crafted ales that are full of flavour and Essex charm. They sell locally and are distributed in bottles and casks only using 100% natural ingredients. If you fancy giving it a go, you can be ‘Brewer for the Day’ and return 2-3 weeks later to collect your own brewed beer.
