Yes, the most romantic day of the year is almost here and, to get you in the mood, we’ve put together the best men’s Valentine’s Day gifts. But first, the Exquisite team have put together a brief history lesson about the most romantic day of the year. Everyone seems to know the origins of Easter and Christmas, but only a handful of people have an inkling about how Valentine’s Day came about. So, let us give you a quick reminder! What are the origins of Valentine’s Day? The day is named after Saint Valentine of Rome, who is said to have fallen in love with a jailer’s daughter, while serving time for arranging secret marriages in 3rd century. And, as the story goes, he sent her a love letter signed ‘Your Valentine’, on February 14th. What a romantic! However, it was not celebrated until the medieval era, a time when courtly love and romantic traditions flourished. Then, with King Henry VIII declaring that all England would celebrate 14th of February as “Saint Valentine’s Day”, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Skip forward to the 21st century and the 14th of February has become one of many incredibly commercialised days of the year. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t romantic anymore. After all, who doesn’t like weekend escapes, being treated to some exquisite lingerie (men – take note for your partner!) and feeling all lovey-dovey? Without further ado, here’s our top picks for the best men’s Valentine’s Day gifts 2018.
