Despite originating from England, Beckham has shown her main collection at New York Fashion Week since her debut. To celebrate the milestone anniversary, she brought her brand home.
Located in the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery beside her flagship store in London’s Dover Street (and live-streamed in Piccadilly Circus), Beckham presented her SS19 collection. British model Stella Tennant opened the show in a blazer worn over a lace-trimmed camisole, belted tailored trousers and silver boots. What followed was a relaxed collection focusing on layering. A knitted dresses had a jumper wrapped around the chest and skirts with a handkerchief hem sat above super-slim crepe trousers and peered out from tailored jackets. It was clothes built for the modern woman, the one on the move, the one that has grown from those fitted dresses she built her debut collection around 10 years ago.
Just days before her London Fashion Week debut, Beckham released images celebrating the 10th anniversary of her brand. Back in 2008 when she was perhaps the most photographed woman, she teamed up with her friend Marc Jacobs and appeared in his spring/summer '08 ad campaign shot by Juergen Teller. Beckham managed to poke fun at herself by turning into the product. A decade on she chose to recreate the ads and called upon Teller to capture it, but this time it was her own brand’s shopping bag she was climbing out of.
"When Marc Jacobs featured me coming out of a shopping bag a decade ago it really was the beginning of my journey into the fashion industry” Victoria explains. “It was funny and ironic and brilliantly captured by Juergen Teller. And it came out just as I was about to present my debut collection. So what better way of illustrating the story of the past ten years than by revisiting the creative but this time with my own branded bag,” Beckham explains on her website.
“Marc gave me his blessing to recreate the shot and Juergen agreed to collaborate with me again which was just incredible and him appearing in one of the images was really important to me. The collaboration with him was incredibly special and I wanted to document it. I have always put all of me in to my brand and I wanted to convey that message with these images. That I am and have been literally putting Victoria into Victoria Beckham since 2008.”
